Because savin’ lives is what we do.
The team and I gave blood today. Tamara hit the gallon mark!
This was only my fourth time giving. I tried giving blood back in high school as one of those excuses to get out of class, but I was anemic at the time, so they weren’t interested. After that, I didn’t try again, just assuming they wouldn’t want it.
About a year ago, a friend of mine was asking for donations for her daughter who was having surgery. Since I didn’t know my blood type, I let that opportunity go as well. But then I received a forwarded press release from a friend - blood supply levels were critically low and with spring break, the student donations couldn’t make up the shortfall. I finally took the hint.
It wasn’t bad at all! A few questions, checking for iron (how about that… 18 years later and all is okay!), finding a vein, a little pinch, squeezing a ball for less than 10 minutes, a BandAid and I’m outta there! Oh - and I found out that I am O Positive (as is the rest of Pinstripe, so we can save each other if the opportunity arises!)
Did you know that 60% of the population is eligible to donate blood, yet only 5% do?!?
Like everything else, I guess we just think that someone else will do it.
It is rarely convenient to take an hour out of the day to donate, but I certainly don’t want to wait until someone I love needs blood.
