Florida Bar postpones enforcement of web rules

The Florida Bar is postponing its enforcement of the new rules governing lawyer websites. Those rules make the inclusion of past results, testimonials and “statements characterizing the quality of legal services” impermissible.

Marketing lawyers like toothpaste? Not so much.

As a professional communicator, I should have no problem explaining the difference between marketing products and services. And yet, I struggle with it every time I encounter a prospective client who expects the phone to ring off the hook with new business if he hires me.
You only need a lawyer when you need a lawyer. [...]

Tampa Bay Marketing Spotlight - Jenn Greacen

It can be a lonely as an entrepreneur. We push ourselves, create goals and milestones to hold ourselves accountable. Without management, we have to seek peers and mentors outside of our organizations to be confidants and sounding boards.
I found a friend and confidant in Jenn Greacen, founder and executive director of Red Frog Marketing. Our [...]

Florida State University wins regional National Student Advertising Competition

Florida State University’s Arrowhead Advertising team won the 4th District American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition in Tampa on April 30th. This is the fourth year in a row and seventh time in the last ten years that FSU has won the competition to represent the 4th District in the national competition.

Striving to be digitally distinct

Well how about that! After years of giving advice about personal branding and presentations about managing online reputations, it looks like I’ve done a pretty good job of doing it for myself.
A friend shared a newsletter from Reach Personal Branding that reinforced many of the concepts I include in my presentations. On their site, I [...]

Web sites have been treated as ‘information upon request’ for years, but the Supreme Court has decided that they must now comply with the advertising rules. Recognizing some of the confusion the new rule has caused, the Bar requested a six month [...]

Florida Bar gets it right with social networks

The Florida Bar Association surprises me on a regular basis… but rarely in a good way. Over the last couple years, there has been a lot of discussion in the legal marketing community about client testimonials - those that appear in directories like Avvo and social networks like LinkedIn.
The rules on advertising prohibit testimonials, statements [...]

Build top-of-mind awareness with an e-newsletter

There are some kinds of businesses that are a part of their customers’ weekly, if not daily routine—grocery stores, drycleaners, and gas stations to name a few. Other companies, such as clothing and hardware stores or even restaurants, also typically attract mostly repeat business. As long these operations offer competitive prices, good service and are [...]

Try social networking – for business and pleasure

Almost everyone in business has heard how important it is to “network.” But for many people, the idea of making the rounds at the local chamber of commerce luncheon isn’t at all appealing. Now, thanks to online social marketing, it’s easy for anyone to make hundreds (if not thousands) of contacts.
Whether or not you’re active [...]

Creativity can solve anything!

The poor people at Art & Copy… I’ve been stalking them!  I saw this trailer online for the movie a couple months ago, and cannot wait to see it.
Some of the industry’s most interesting people are featured, including my hero, the legend, Mary Wells Lawrence.
You can read the synopsis here, but the trailer says it all. [...]
